The age limits for Malta’s program offering a free six-month gym membership for young people have been expanded.
The announcement was made by Finance Minister Clyde Caruana while presenting the draft state budget.
The measure was first introduced last year and initially applied only to young people born in 2005, 2006, and 2007. The program started when Bulletproof Culture from the fitness community proposed it which led to public awareness through their fitness promotion campaign. The campaign used workout videos which former bodybuilder Robert Abela demonstrated to attract a large number of viewers.
Under the updated rules, teenagers and young adults aged 16 to 21 will be eligible for the free gym membership. The population includes all people who were born during the years 2004 through 2009.
The open market shows six-month gym membership prices between €250 and €450. Students can take advantage of special membership prices which many fitness centers provide.
