Mexico has made a groundbreaking achievement for animal protection through its decision to establish a permanent ban on using marine mammals such as dolphins and sea lions and orcas for public shows. The decision creates an international message which promotes wildlife encounters through proper visitor behavior instead of using animals for exploitation.
According to Humane World for Animals Mexico, the new law was unanimously approved by the country’s Chamber of Deputies and brings an end to decades of commercial shows that relied on the captivity and performance of marine animals.
Dr. Claudia Edwards from Humane World for Animals Mexico Programs Director declared this development as a crucial moment.
The decision marks a crucial moment which will bring an end to the practice of using whales and dolphins and other marine mammals for entertainment purposes.
The law establishes Mexico as a worldwide model which demonstrates that wildlife protection and ethical value promotion can exist together.
A New Future for Captive Dolphins
Currently, around 350 dolphins live in captivity across Mexico. The new law requires these animals to move into protected marine enclosures which function as coastal sanctuaries that duplicate their original habitat.
The law establishes a complete ban on marine mammal capture and breeding activities and their confinement for any reason except scientific studies which work to rebuild their natural populations. Tourist attractions which include swimming with dolphins and taking selfies and watching choreographed shows will become illegal.
Dr. Yolanda Alanís from the National Autonomous University of Mexico who has dedicated her career to marine animal protection expressed her support for this decision.
“The world needs to understand that entertainment must never require someone to lose their freedom or their life.”
A Choice for Travelers
The Mexican government has established a new policy which serves as a warning to all tourists who need to select their travel activities with greater care. Tourists should support ocean cleanup programs and protected reserve tours and marine ecosystem preservation efforts instead of visiting marine parks.
Our planet benefits from all responsible decisions because they decrease ocean stress and safeguard the wildlife which exists with us.
